Unlike the ULN2003A driver covered separately that drives unipolar 28BYJ-48 hobby steppers through 4-phase sequential pin control, this a4988 stepper motor driver targets bipolar NEMA 17 motors used in 3D printers, CNC machines, and precision automation systems.

The stepper motor driver’s STEP/DIR interface is simpler to use than 4-wire phase sequencing — one digital pulse on the STEP pin advances the motor one step, while the DIR pin level sets the direction, allowing any microcontroller including basic arduino stepper motor driver setups to control complex stepper motion with minimal pin usage and a standard stepper library. Per the a4988 pinout, MS1/MS2/MS3 pins select the microstepping resolution — at 1/16 mode, a standard 200-step NEMA 17 completes 3200 microsteps per revolution for noticeably smoother, quieter motion than full-step operation.
