Description

The GPS External Active Antenna with SMA Connector is an amplified antenna (a signal-boosting receiver) that improves satellite reception for GPS modules with weak built-in ceramic antennas. The sma antenna connects via a standard SMA-Male plug and covers the GPS L1 band from 1570 to 1610 MHz, which is the frequency range used by all GPS satellites worldwide. It draws 15mA at 2.7V to 5V DC, meaning the GPS module itself supplies the power through the coaxial cable (the shielded signal wire inside the cable). No separate power connection is needed.

The non-obvious detail about the gps antenna is how the power actually reaches the active element. Inside the coaxial cable, the GPS module sends DC voltage through the centre conductor to power the LNA (Low Noise Amplifier — a chip that boosts weak satellite signals). If GPS module does not support this bias voltage on the antenna pin, the active element will not work and gain drops to near zero. Check your GPS module datasheet before purchasing. The honest trade-off is the cable length. A longer cable adds signal loss. The gain of 28dB ±2dB at the antenna element compensates for reasonable cable runs, but very long cables reduce the net gain at the receiver end.
