The MAX9814 Microphone AGC Amplifier Module amplifies audio from an onboard electret condenser microphone and adjusts gain automatically using the MAX9814 IC’s built-in AGC circuit. Loud sounds get attenuated and quiet sounds get boosted, so your ADC sees a consistent 2Vpp signal on a 1.25V DC bias across the full frequency range of 20Hz to 20kHz. The max9814 microphone runs on 2.7V to 5V DC at just 3mA typical current.

The max9814 microphone amplifier module offers three fixed gain settings selected by the GAIN pin. Connect GAIN to VDD for 40dB, GND for 50dB, and leave it floating for 60dB. A non-obvious detail is that the AGC attack and release times are fixed inside the MAX9814 IC and cannot be adjusted externally. In environments with rapid sound level changes, the AGC may not respond fast enough, causing brief clipping or under-amplification during sudden transitions. Total harmonic distortion is only 0.04% at typical settings, giving very clean audio output.
