The ATmega328P handles the main Arduino sketch execution at 16MHz while the ESP8266 manages WiFi communication independently — allowing the arduino uno r3 to connect to networks, serve web pages, send HTTP requests, and publish MQTT data without any separate shield or module purchase.

The arduino uno wifi board operates on 3.3V to 5V and draws up to 800mA total — most of which is consumed by the ESP8266 during WiFi transmission bursts. One practical setup note: the ATmega328P and ESP8266 communicate via serial on this board. The Arduino sketch sends AT commands to the over the hardware UART, meaning the hardware serial port is shared between WiFi communication and USB debug output. Using SoftwareSerial for debug output frees the hardware UART for communication during active WiFi sessions. One trade-off: the 800mA peak current demand requires a power supply capable of delivering this — USB 2.0 ports rated at 500mA may cause instability under peak WiFi load.
