The GP2Y0A41SK0F IR Distance Measuring Sensor Module measures the distance to an object between 4cm and 30cm using infrared triangulation (a method where an IR LED emits light, and a position-sensitive detector measures the angle of the reflected beam to calculate distance). The gp2y0a41sk0f ir sensor outputs an analog voltage that decreases as the object moves farther away. It draws 30mA of current and operates between 10°C and 60°C, covering all standard indoor conditions.
The gp2y0a41sk0f ir distance sensor has a non-linear output curve — the voltage does not decrease evenly as distance increases. Closer distances produce steeper voltage changes than farther distances. One non-obvious detail — the output is not directly proportional to distance. You need a lookup table or the inverse function from the sensor datasheet to convert voltage to centimetres accurately. The honest limitation is the 30cm maximum range. For distances beyond 30cm, a different longer-range sensor is needed. Very close objects below 4cm also cause an incorrect high-voltage reading.
The IR Distance Sensor connects to Arduino analog pins through a standard connector. Robotics students building obstacle avoiders, engineers making short-range proximity detectors, and hobbyists experimenting with distance-triggered projects all use it regularly. To start, connect VCC to 5V, GND to GND, and the output wire to an analog pin. StemVolt supplies this sensor tested with confirmed analog output across the 4cm to 30cm range.
