The AS608 Optical Fingerprint Sensor Module is a standalone biometric fingerprint scanner that captures, processes, and stores fingerprint templates onboard at 500dpi resolution, matching a presented finger against up to 162 stored fingerprints in under 1 second. The Fingerprint Sensor Module communicates over UART or USB at 3.3V DC, drawing under 60mA supply current, and is directly supported by the Adafruit Fingerprint Sensor Arduino library — enabling enrollment and verification builds with fewer than 50 lines of code for college attendance, door lock, and access control projects.

Per the as608 fingerprint datasheet, the AS608 stores fingerprint templates as processed feature vectors — not raw fingerprint images — in its onboard flash memory. This means the optical fingerprint scanner does not transmit or expose the actual fingerprint image over UART, only a match result and template ID number. The two-step workflow requires first enrolling each finger twice to build a reliable template, then running verify mode to compare a presented finger against the stored library.

The optical fingerprint sensor UART interface uses a packet-based command protocol — the Arduino library handles packet framing and checksum validation automatically. One practical trade-off: optical fingerprint sensors perform less reliably with wet, oily, or worn fingertips — dry the finger before scanning and avoid enrolment immediately after manual labour or washing, as surface ridge contrast is reduced and the 500dpi capture may generate an inconsistent template.
