Description

The INMP441 MEMS Omnidirectional Microphone Module captures audio using a MEMS microphone and outputs digital I2S audio data directly, skipping the analog path entirely. The i2s microphone module runs on 3.3V at just 1.4mA and covers a frequency range of 60Hz to 15000Hz, which covers all intelligible speech and most audio monitoring needs. The I2S interface sends left and right channel data over three wires, so no ADC is needed on the host MCU.

The inmp441 module delivers a signal to noise ratio of 61 dBA and a sensitivity of 26 dBFS, which is high enough to detect whispered speech in a quiet room. A non-obvious detail is that the INMP441 has a fixed I2S format and does not support PDM mode. Some ESP-IDF examples use PDM by default, so you need to explicitly configure I2S standard mode in your firmware. Operating voltage is 3.3V only. Connecting 5V will damage the chip permanently.

voice assistant developers, and audio logging makers use the i2s microphone with ESP32 and Arduino IDE using the I2S library. StemVolt provide this omnidirectional microphone module ready to wire on a standard pin header.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I connect the INMP441 MEMS Omnidirectional Microphone Module to ESP32?
+
Connect VDD to 3.3V, GND to GND, SD to a data GPIO, SCK to clock GPIO, and WS to word select GPIO on ESP32. The INMP441 MEMS Omnidirectional Microphone Module uses standard I2S mode. Configure I2S in Arduino IDE or ESP-IDF before reading audio samples.
What is the operating voltage of the I2S microphone module?
+
The I2S microphone module runs on 3.3V only. Never connect 5V to the VDD pin as the INMP441 MEMS chip will be permanently damaged. Use a 3.3V regulated supply from your ESP32 or add a voltage regulator if your board outputs only 5V.
What SNR does the INMP441 MEMS Omnidirectional Microphone Module have?
+
The INMP441 MEMS Omnidirectional Microphone Module has a signal to noise ratio of 61 dBA. At this level the background noise floor is low enough for clear voice capture and audio FFT analysis at typical room distances without preamplification.
Does the I2S microphone work with Arduino Uno?
+
The I2S microphone does not work with Arduino Uno as Uno lacks a hardware I2S peripheral. Use an ESP32, ESP32-S3, or STM32 board that has native I2S support. Configure the I2S driver in Arduino IDE or MicroPython before sampling audio data.
What frequency range does the INMP441 MEMS Omnidirectional Microphone Module cover?
+
The INMP441 MEMS Omnidirectional Microphone Module covers 60Hz to 15000Hz. This range captures all human speech frequencies and most audio monitoring bands. The sensitivity of 26 dBFS keeps low-level sounds above the noise floor across this entire range.
