Description

The MQ-6 Gas Sensor Module is a 32mm x 20mm x 22mm semiconductor gas sensor specifically tuned for detecting Propane, Butane, and LPG across a 200 to 10,000 ppm range, operating at 5V DC within -20°C to 40°C ambient temperature. The mq6 gas sensor uses the same SnO2 sensing principle and onboard heater element as other MQ-series sensors, but with a sensing layer composition optimised for sensitivity to propane and butane molecules specifically — making it the preferred choice over MQ-5 for LPG cylinders used in Indian households, which contain a propane-butane mixture rather than purely natural gas.

The mq 6 sensor analog output works identically to other MQ sensors — resistance decreases as propane/butane/LPG concentration increases, read through a voltage divider on Arduino’s analog pin. Like the MQ-5, this propane gas sensor requires heater warm-up before stable readings — initial power-up readings should be ignored for several minutes while the SnO2 element reaches operating temperature. The lpg gas sensor mq6 -20°C to 40°C operating range makes it suitable for kitchen environments where temperature varies with cooking activity.

One practical trade-off: for detecting LPG cylinder leaks specifically — the most common household gas safety application in India — this propane gas detector sensor (MQ-6) is generally preferred over MQ-5 due to its tuning toward propane/butane mixtures found in domestic LPG cylinders. This StemVolt sensor is well-suited for engineers building LPG leak detection alarms and practical kitchen safety electronics projects.
