Description

The MQ-8 gas sensor module specifically detects hydrogen (H2) gas by measuring its concentration in the surrounding air. It runs at 5V DC and outputs an analog voltage (a variable signal that changes relative to pollution level) between 0.1 and 0.3V on the output pin. The mq8 gas sensor connects directly to any Arduino or ESP32 analog input pin for immediate readings.

One non-obvious technical detail is that the MQ-8 uses a heated metal oxide element that draws 150mA continuously, even when no gas is present. Never power it from a microcontroller 5V pin rated below 200mA or it will cause unstable readings and possible resets. The honest limitation is that this H2 gas sensor cannot distinguish hydrogen from other combustible gases at very high concentrations, so it works best in environments where hydrogen is the primary concern.

Labs, and fuel cell project builders use this mq8 sensor module from StemVolt for hydrogen leak detection and safety alarm builds. Connect to a dedicated 5V rail, wire to analog input, and read the ADC value in your sketch to get started.

Features:

  • Sensor type MQ-8 specifically targets hydrogen H2 gas for accurate single-gas detection
  • Current consumption of 150mA requires a dedicated power rail separate from microcontroller pin
  • Analog output voltage of 0.1 to 0.3V gives a proportional signal for concentration mapping
