The NEO-M8N GPS Module with Compass is a combined GPS receiver and digital magnetometer module for APM and Pixhawk flight controllers, providing the flight controller with two essential pieces of navigation information — the drone’s precise position on Earth from the GPS receiver and the drone’s heading direction from the integrated compass — which together enable GPS-dependent flight modes including position hold, Return to Home, and autonomous waypoint navigation on F450, F550, and larger drone frames. Without a GPS and compass module, an APM or Pixhawk flight controller can only fly in manual or altitude-hold mode and cannot navigate autonomously or return to the takeoff point safely. This neo m8n gps module uses the genuine u-blox NEO-M8N chip — the M8 generation u-blox engine that supports 72 simultaneous satellite tracking channels across multiple global navigation satellite systems including GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou.
The neo m8n gps compass module’s 72-channel M8 engine and 18Hz position update rate deliver a position accuracy of 0.6 to 0.9 metres under open sky conditions, and the -161 to -167 dBm tracking sensitivity allows the module to maintain a satellite lock in conditions where less sensitive GPS receivers would lose signal. The integrated HMC5883L or QMC5883L digital magnetometer (compass chip) is mounted on the same module board and connects to the Pixhawk or APM flight controller’s compass port, providing the heading reference that the flight controller needs to know which direction is forward during GPS position-hold and RTH operations.
