Description

The V2.0 Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensor measures water content in soil by detecting changes in the dielectric constant around its probe, not by passing current between two bare metal electrodes. Running on 3.3V to 5.5V at just 5mA, it connects directly to any microcontroller through a PH2.54-3P connector. Unlike resistive sensors, the capacitive soil moisture sensor uses a coated PCB probe so no metal is ever in direct contact with water or soil ions.

The non-obvious point here is that capacitive sensing measures the effective capacitance of the soil-probe system, which changes with water content because water has a dielectric constant of about 80 compared to roughly 4 for dry soil. That large difference makes the output highly sensitive even to small changes in moisture. One honest trade-off with the capacitive moisture sensor is that soil temperature also slightly shifts the dielectric constant, so readings taken at 5°C will differ from readings at 35°C even at identical moisture levels.

Students doing plant biology experiments and building auto-watering rigs, and IoT makers logging field data all reach for this soil moisture sensor. StemVolt provides this sensor with trusted quality, ensuring reliable performance and easy usability.
