The 8 Channel IR Infrared Sensor Array is a high-resolution line detection module with eight independent infrared sensing channels, each outputting a digital signal, operating from 3.3V to 5V DC at 100mA total current. The 8 channel ir array sensor has an optimal sensing distance of 3mm from the floor surface and a maximum sensing distance of 9.5mm — the narrow range is intentional, providing sharp contrast discrimination between black line and white background that wider-range sensors cannot achieve at close floor clearance. The tighter sensing geometry makes this ir line following sensor ideal for high-speed competition line follower robots where precise track position is critical.
The 8 channel ir line sensor array provides an 8-bit digital output pattern — all eight channels read simultaneously give a binary representation of the line position across the full sensor width. A centred robot produces pattern 00011000, far-left drift gives 10000000, and far-right gives 00000001, with intermediate patterns indicating partial drift — this 8-bit resolution gives the PID controller a much finer error signal than 4 or 5 channel arrays, allowing tighter and more responsive steering corrections. The infrared detection sensor connects to eight Arduino digital input pins or a single 8-bit shift register for GPIO-efficient builds.
The 3mm optimal sensing height requires the 8 array ir sensor to be mounted very close to the floor surface — chassis vibration, uneven floors, and track joint gaps can cause false readings if the sensor momentarily lifts above 9.5mm. This sensor is suitable for builders and enthusiasts developing multi-sensor line tracking project and robotics automation projects.
