The BFD-1000 Five Channel Infrared Tracking Sensor Module uses five IR (infrared) emitter-receiver pairs spread across one PCB to detect a line up to 4cm below the sensor. The bfd 1000 5 channel sensor runs on 3.3V to 5V DC, so it connects directly to Arduino and most microcontroller boards. Each channel outputs a digital signal (HIGH or LOW) and has its own LED indicator that lights up on detection.
A non-obvious fact here is that having five channels instead of two means the robot can detect curves much earlier and correct its path before it drifts off track. The 5 channel ir line tracking sensor module does struggle on very shiny or transparent floors, so always test your surface before the final build. Keep detection distance within the 0 to 4cm range for reliable black-line readings.
Students and robotics club members use with Arduino Uno and Nano. Connect the five signal pins, VCC, and GND to get started. StemVolt provide this module ready to wire directly to your board.
