Description

The Sound Detection Module Sensor picks up ambient sound through an onboard electret microphone and processes it through the LM393 comparator IC, outputting a digital signal on the DO pin when sound crosses the threshold. The sound sensor runs on 3.3V to 5V DC with an induction distance of 0.5 metre, making it suitable for close-range clap detection and sound-activated triggering.

The sound detection sensor also provides an analog output on the AO pin that reflects raw microphone amplitude. A non-obvious limitation is that the sensitivity potentiometer on the board sets a fixed comparator threshold. In noisy environments the digital output triggers continuously, making it unreliable without software debouncing. The LM393 output is open-collector, so a pull-up resistor on DO is needed for a stable HIGH state.

Students and automation builders use the sound sensor arduino connection with digitalRead on DO or analogRead on AO. StemVolt ships this module ready to plug into a breadboard immediately.
