The V2.0 Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensor is a slim 10cm x 2.4cm PCB probe operating from 3.3V to 5.5V at only 5mA current, outputting an analog voltage through a PH2.54-3P connector. The capacitive soil moisture sensor measures moisture by detecting changes in the soil’s dielectric constant — as water content increases, the dielectric constant of the soil increases, and the sensor’s capacitance changes accordingly, without passing any electrical current through the soil itself.

This non-current-through-soil approach is the fundamental advantage of the capacitive soil moisture sensor v1 2 and its V2.0 successor over resistive sensors — because no current flows between exposed electrodes, there is no electrolytic corrosion of the probe, making the capacitive moisture sensor significantly more durable for long-term buried installation, especially in saline soils where resistive sensors fail quickly due to mineral-driven conductivity interference. The V2.0 designation refers to an improved board design over V1.2 with better component placement and protective coating for greater long-term stability.
