The 5mm IR LED Infrared Transmitter is a through-hole IR LED (a Light Emitting Diode that outputs infrared light invisible to the eye) with a forward voltage of 1.2V to 1.4V and forward current of 100mA. The ir 5mm infrared led transmits up to 1 to 2 metres line-of-sight. Always add a current-limiting resistor between the LED anode and your GPIO pin.
The 5mm ir emitting diode emits an infrared cone, not a narrow beam. One non-obvious detail — alignment matters more than power. A 15-degree off-axis placement can halve effective range. The honest limitation is that sunlight contains strong IR that interferes with the receiver signal outdoors. The ir transmitter led 5mm pairs with IR photodiodes and TSOP receivers on Arduino and ESP32 boards. To start, add a 100 ohm resistor from the GPIO pin to the anode, connect cathode to GND, and drive HIGH. StemVolt supplies this LED tested for confirmed IR output.
