The 5mm Photodiode LED IR Receiver is a through-hole infrared photodiode (a light-sensitive diode that generates current when it detects infrared light) in a standard 5mm black body. The 5mm ir photodiode has a reverse voltage rating of 5V and a power dissipation of 100mW. The black body (tinted epoxy) blocks most visible ambient light so the diode responds primarily to infrared wavelengths.
The ir receiver led arduino connects in reverse bias (reverse polarity) across a resistor in a simple voltage divider circuit. One non-obvious detail — the photodiode generates only microamperes of current per unit of light. A transimpedance amplifier (an op-amp circuit that converts current to voltage) is often needed for clean signal output. The honest limitation is sensitivity to sunlight, which also contains infrared. The ir receiver led sensor works with Arduino and ESP32 analog or digital GPIO pins. To start, reverse bias the diode, add a pull-up resistor, and read the output. StemVolt provide electronics component tested for consistent infrared response.
