The GY-273 HMC5883L Triple Axis Compass Magnetometer Sensor Module measures magnetic field strength across all three axes using the HMC5883L driver IC. It outputs heading data at up to 160Hz over I2C at 400kHz, making it fast enough for real-time compass and orientation tracking. The gy 273 sensor accepts 3V to 5V input, so it connects directly to both 3.3V and 5V microcontrollers without a level shifter in most cases.
The gy 273 magnetometer sensor uses a 12-bit ADC internally, which gives finer heading resolution than 10-bit alternatives. An important limitation is that the measurement range tops out at plus or minus 8 Gauss. Strong nearby magnets or motor fields above this threshold will saturate the sensor and produce incorrect readings. The triple axis magnetometer sensor requires software calibration using hard and soft iron correction to get accurate compass headings in real environments.
Drone builders and autonomous robot navigators building digital compass projects all use the hmc5883l magnetometer regularly. StemVolt provide sensor module ready to use. Use Arduino IDE with the HMC5883L library with an I2C driver to read heading data within minutes.
