The JF-0530B DC 12V Push-Pull Linear Solenoid converts electrical current into straight-line mechanical force using an internal wound coil and ferromagnetic plunger. Apply 12V DC and the plunger either extends or retracts with 5N of force across a 10mm stroke. No gears or linkages are involved. The linear solenoid 12v draws 1A at rated voltage, so switching it through a MOSFET driver or relay module triggered from an Arduino GPIO pin is the correct approach. Direct connection to a microcontroller pin will damage the board.
The linear solenoid actuator should not operate continuously without thermal management. At 1A draw the coil generates heat, and running it energised for minutes at a stretch degrades the winding insulation over time. A jf-0530b datasheet detail is that the 5N rated force applies at a specific plunger position near the start of travel. As the plunger extends toward the full 10mm, the electromagnetic force drops because the air gap between the plunger and core increases. At the end of the stroke the effective force is noticeably lower than 5N. Design mechanical load so it engages the plunger at mid-stroke rather than full extension for the most consistent actuation force.
Robotics students, automation engineers and machine builders all use the electromagnetic actuator for latches, dispensers, valves, and sorting gates. StemVolt provide solenoid with leads pre-attached and ready to wire into any relay or MOSFET driver circuit running on 12V DC.
