The M12 Inductive Proximity Sensor PNP model LJ12A3-4-ZBY detects the presence of metal objects within 4mm without any physical contact. Inductive proximity (a sensing method that uses a magnetic field to detect nearby metal) means the sensor never touches the target, so there is no mechanical wear over time. The lj12a3-4-z/by inductive proximity sensor has a 12mm threaded cylindrical body that threads directly into standard industrial sensor brackets.

The lj12a3-4-z/by inductive proximity operates on 5V to 36V DC, which makes it usable with both 5V Arduino projects and 24V industrial control panels. One non-obvious detail — the output is NPN Normally Open, meaning the output wire is floating at rest and pulls LOW when metal is detected.
