The GY-273 HMC5883L Triple Axis Compass Magnetometer Sensor Module measures magnetic field strength across selectable ±1.3 to ±8 Gauss ranges with 12-bit ADC resolution, communicating via I2C (up to 400kHz) at a 160Hz data rate, operating from 3V to 5V across -30°C to 85°C. The gy 273 sensor is a standalone three-axis magnetometer — the same compass functionality bundled inside larger IMUs like the MPU-9250, but available here as a dedicated single-purpose module for projects needing only heading direction without motion or orientation sensing.

The gy 273 magnetometer sensor works by detecting the strength and direction of Earth’s magnetic field across its X, Y, and Z axes, calculating a compass heading using trigonometry on the X-Y plane readings. This triple axis magnetometer sensor’s HMC5883L driver IC provides raw magnetic readings, but accurate true-north navigation requires applying magnetic declination correction — the angular difference between magnetic north (where the sensor points) and true geographic north, which varies by location and must be looked up or calibrated for the deployment area.
